Fire at the School
Nov. 11, 1999
This afternoon the building that we know as Bishop Spencer on Bond Street (now the Spencerian Condominiums) went up in a spectacular fire. The fire apparently started sometime before 2 p.m. in the ceiling of the "domestic science room" and spread along under the roof.

Barbara (Parsons) Clancy '63, my son Bruce, & I watched from "the tobacco factory" corner as the tower roon filled with fire and finally crashed - part of it to the ground outside!

Many fire and police vehicles surrounded the block and 14 hoses were trained on the fire as well as nearby buildings to prevent them from catching. The roof is completely gone but we don't yet know the damage to the lower floors. When we left at 5 p.m. fire hoses were still pouring gallons of water on the upper floor but flames could still be seen in places. It was a damp day with little wind.
