Dear Spencerians: No doubt you all know by now that the building we knew as Spencer was destroyed by fire on November 11, 1999. Remembrance Day had a slightly different significance for us this year. Alumnae secretary Barbara (Parsons) Clancy '63 and I accompanied by my son Bruce (who maintains the Spencer lists) went to the fire. Other Spencerians had gathered and we stood in the fog & drizzle by the old tobacco factory and watched the fire break through the roof and devour the tower room. We understand the building will be razed to make room for a new structure. You'll be glad to know that there was no loss of life in the fire. Reunion news is taking up most of this issue. The Committee is meeting regularly; sub-committees are working hard; and a good time is anticipated in July. A new registration form is enclosed with letter. If you've already sent your form & money, you may ignore this one. Otherwise, if you're planning to attend the reunion, immediately send us back the form & the $50.00 registration fee. ($50.00 covers registration kits, insurance, up-front fees, prizes, some rentals, etc.) We need your registration by February 29, 2000 – so leap to it.(Couldn't resist!) If this letter gets to you after that date(we can't control the world's postal systems), just send in the form and money as soon as possible. At our mid-March meeting, we will try to firm up the numbers – at least have a really good idea of how many Spencerians are coming. Note: 125 have already registered.

LAUGH of the MONTH In an attempt to find the American Spencerians we put ads in three American Legion magazines. A line was omitted in one which made the ad sound like I was ex-USAF attempting a reunion of similar servicemen! I've had about 70 letters, some of them from very elderly gentlemen telling me of their memories of St. John's! They were fun to read but not very helpful! We answered all of them. OTHER ACTIVITIES Jul.-Aug. 2000
DUES It's January and Alumnae membership dues ($10.00 for most; $5.00 for associate members) are due for 2000. This is the last Spencer Letter you will receive unless your dues are paid up-to-date. Yes, you may attend the reunion without being a member, but you will be able to vote at the annual general meeting only if your dues are up-to-date. FIRE PICTURES Pictures of the fire (in colour) will be on display & available at the Reunion. (Click here for some pictures.) LISTS We now have about 1900 names on class lists and addresses (postal &/or e-mail) for over 1200. We especially need lists of those who were there in the last years – 1969-1972.

T-SHIRTS Click here for the t-shirt order form. There will be two more mailings before the reunion; one will go out at about the same time as this letter and one in May. Shirts will be for sale at the reunion – along with navy blue berets in cotton or wool with the BSC crest and possibly other items. Note: the navy blue sweatshirt runs large. Also note: It's really beyond the tee committee's time to change them once sent. If we get different shirts, we'll advise you in the next Spencer Letter. Please enclose your order form and the appropriate cheque or money order and send to T-SHIRT, BSC Alumnae, 12 Kent Place, St. John's, NF, A1B 1V5. Order form and payment should reach us as soon as possible. We had to pay for the shirts up front so we need the orders ASAP. Tee sizes: M, L, XL - $19.00 (Cdn. or US) £10 Tee sizes: XXL - $22.00 (C. or US) £12 Polo sizes: M, L, XL - $27.00 (C. or US) £14 Polo sizes: XXL - $30.00 (C. or US) £16 Sweat navy: M, L, XL - $40.00 (C. or US) £21 Sweat navy: XXL - $43.00 (C. or US) £22 Sweat white: M, L, XL - $32.00 (C. or US) £17 Sweat white: XXL - $35.00 (C. or US) £18 |
