- the newsletter for Spencerians -
12 Kent Place, St. John's, Newfoundland, Canada A1B 1V5

editor: Elizabeth (Scammell) Reynolds '54

Dear Spencerians:
No doubt you all know by now that the building we knew as Spencer was destroyed by fire on November 11, 1999. Remembrance Day had a slightly different significance for us this year. Alumnae secretary Barbara (Parsons) Clancy '63 and I accompanied by my son Bruce (who maintains the Spencer lists) went to the fire. Other Spencerians had gathered and we stood in the fog & drizzle by the old tobacco factory and watched the fire break through the roof and devour the tower room. We understand the building will be razed to make room for a new structure. You'll be glad to know that there was no loss of life in the fire.

Reunion news is taking up most of this issue. The Committee is meeting regularly; sub-committees are working hard; and a good time is anticipated in July. A new registration form is enclosed with letter. If you've already sent your form & money, you may ignore this one. Otherwise, if you're planning to attend the reunion, immediately send us back the form & the $50.00 registration fee. ($50.00 covers registration kits, insurance, up-front fees, prizes, some rentals, etc.) We need your registration by February 29, 2000 so leap to it.(Couldn't resist!) If this letter gets to you after that date(we can't control the world's postal systems), just send in the form and money as soon as possible. At our mid-March meeting, we will try to firm up the numbers at least have a really good idea of how many Spencerians are coming. Note: 125 have already registered.
No word on any special functions but folks are busy with plans for various activities.
Jean (Guy) Weerasinghe '64 in Ottawa called to say she's polling Spencerians in Ontario & Quebec to see if there's any interest in a bus trip to Newfoundland for the reunion; dates: about July 23 to Aug. 8. Contact her at or 613-747-2272.

The St. John's group are planning a fund-raising brunch & auction on May 6. We need auction donations (call Elizabeth 709-722-4546). Any help (eg. auction items, money) from anyone would be appreciated.

We need photographs (good copies fully labelled), uniforms (well, one or two), costumes from plays, report cards, speech day programs, sports day medals, navy blue bloomers, etc., to mount an interesting display at the reunion.

Reunion Wrap-up for Organizing Committees

Forms will be sent out to Registrants in May with Costs for various activities. These forms will need to be completed and returned to enable us to plan for numbers wishing to attend.

In an effort to keep reunion prices to a minimum, a fund raising committee has been formed chaired by Pam (Tulk) Roberts '52. We are seeking (and have already received some) corporate and private donations.
We are mindful of the fact that not all of our members are Anglican but are of other Christian denominations and some are Jewish. So we'll try to make the service as ecumenical as possible. Suggestions are welcome contact the Rev. Trudy Gosse (former faculty) 22 Roosevelt Ave., Mount Pearl, NF A1N 1Z4. We are hoping that former choir members will form a choir for this service; check at the registration desk early on July 26 for information on place & time of choir practice (which will probably be mid-afternoon.)

Important: Please let us know if you need wheelchair or other special services for any reunion event.

A nomination committee has been formed with Jean Murray '33 as chair. A slate of officers will be presented to the annual general meeting of the Alumnae Association held during the reunion. If you have any comments or suggestions, please write or call Jean at 70 Circular Rd., St. John's, NF A1C 2F3 709-726-5961.

1.To Edith (Maidment) Noel '59 for help with the US Serviceman's letters.
2.The Reunion Committee & sub-committee members Betty & Co. are doing a super job!
3.Cheryl Hawkins '60 for T-Shirt Committee.
4.Thanks to Pam (Tulk) Roberts '52 for volunteering to head up the corporate fund-raising endeavour.
  LAUGH of the MONTH
In an attempt to find the American Spencerians we put ads in three American Legion magazines. A line was omitted in one which made the ad sound like I was ex-USAF attempting a reunion of similar servicemen! I've had about 70 letters, some of them from very elderly gentlemen telling me of their memories of St. John's! They were fun to read but not very helpful! We answered all of them.

-Regatta Day is Wed. Aug. 2, 2000.
-If you attended Memorial University College or Memorial University in any year you are eligible to attend Memorial's annual summer reunion. In 2000, it's taking place on Aug. 4 & 5. Write Lynda Parsons, Associate Director of Development, Alumni House, Memorial University, St. John's, NF A1C 5S7 or call her at 709-737-4354.

It's January and Alumnae membership dues ($10.00 for most; $5.00 for associate members) are due for 2000. This is the last Spencer Letter you will receive unless your dues are paid up-to-date. Yes, you may attend the reunion without being a member, but you will be able to vote at the annual general meeting only if your dues are up-to-date.

Pictures of the fire (in colour) will be on display & available at the Reunion. (Click here for some pictures.)

We now have about 1900 names on class lists and addresses (postal &/or e-mail) for over 1200. We especially need lists of those who were there in the last years 1969-1972.

Click here for the t-shirt order form. There will be two more mailings before the reunion; one will go out at about the same time as this letter and one in May. Shirts will be for sale at the reunion along with navy blue berets in cotton or wool with the BSC crest and possibly other items.
Note: the navy blue sweatshirt runs large.
Also note: It's really beyond the tee committee's time to change them once sent. If we get different shirts, we'll advise you in the next Spencer Letter.

Please enclose your order form and the appropriate cheque or money order and send to T-SHIRT, BSC Alumnae, 12 Kent Place, St. John's, NF, A1B 1V5. Order form and payment should reach us as soon as possible. We had to pay for the shirts up front so we need the orders ASAP.

Tee sizes: XXL - $22.00 (C. or US) 12

The Spencer Millennium Cook Book project needs you. If we get enough recipes, we'll publish a cook book for the Reunion. Send along your recipes before Easter to Cook Book, P.O. Box 21146, St. John's, NF A1A 5B2.

Please let us know your new address, phone number, fax, e-mail, etc.
