Scholarship Criteria 2003

1. Two (2) C$1000 scholarships may be awarded in any one academic year. One will be awarded for entrance level to a post-secondary program and the second for on-going studies in a post-secondary program (second year or higher).
2. The scholarship(s) will be tenable for full-time study in a program at an accredited post-secondary institution. The program of studies must be a minimum of two years duration. Students must be enrolled in courses that are credited towards a degree or diploma.
3. The Trustees may, at their discretion and not necessarily every year, give an award for outstanding academic achievement. This award will be known as the "Stirling Award for Academic Excellence" in honour of Miss Emily G. Stirling, the first Newfoundland-born head mistress at Bishop Spencer College. This award is not renewable and will be awarded only once to any one student. The recipient, if any, will be chosen from the scholarship applicants for that year.
4. The scholarships are not renewable and must be applied for each year. If, in any one year, no student is eligible to receive a scholarship then, at the discretion of the Trustees, additional scholarships may be awarded in another year.
5. Only those applicants who meet the following criteria will be eligible to receive the scholarship:
A) any Spencerian (as defined by the constitution of the BSCAA)
B) any female relative or female descendant of a Spencerian (daughter, granddaughter, great-granddaughter, sister, niece, etc.) Such relationship will be verified by the Scholarship Trustees and/or members of the executive of the BSCAA
C) any other female deemed qualified by the Trustees.
6. At Bishop Spencer College the philosophy of a well-rounded education involved much more than basic academics. Therefore, in keeping with that philosophy, each applicant for this scholarship must provide details of her extra-curricular involvement and personal goals, as well as her academic accomplishments.
7. All applicants will be required to submit the following necessary documentation:
A) a fully completed application form
B) a resume of not more than two (2) typewritten pages (include any work experience)
C) an essay of not more than three (3) typewritten pages discussing your personal achievements and aspirations for the future
D) two (2) letters of reference (not from a relative or family member)
i) a letter of academic reference from a principal, teacher, or professor, preferably associated with the applicant's area of studies or proposed area of studies
ii) a letter of personal reference
E) an official transcript of the applicant's most recent marks. Those applying for the entrance scholarship must include a transcript of their final high school marks.

FAILURE TO INCLUDE ALL NECESSARY DOCUMENTATION WILL RESULT IN DISQUALIFICATION OF THE APPLICANT.
8. Financial need may be taken into consideration in the awarding of these scholarships.
9. The deadline for submission of applications will be August 31st.
10. The decision of the Trustees will be final and binding.
